"It gives me time to do my own work." Since he's pretty sure he's never going to get that far into his career to make a name for it. "And if I do that, then I know. And if I know, my father knows. And I'm not putting him through that before I have to."

He knows it's not smart, but it's what he has.

She stares at him. She actually stares at him, gaping a little. "Why are you doing this on your own?" she asks, her tone quietly stunned. "You're acting like you think you're on borrowed time but you don't know for certain, and even if you are, we've got one of the top neurosurgeons in the world right down the hall, Stiles!"

Wow. She's actually really upset. Way more upset than even she might have expected.

"Scott has his own problems. Everyone has their own problems, Lydia." Especially here. Beacon Hills has it's deathy nicknames for a reason. "I didn't mean to upset you."

[lefthandedgenius]

"You didn't mean to upset me." She begins pacing back and forth. "You're an idiot, did you know that? The smartest nitwit I've ever met. This isn't something you avoid. Not using the resources at your disposal is a mistake. Thinking like you're on borrowed time is a mistake." She levels a look at him. "What do you care if I'm upset, anyway?"

She's actually, well. She realizes she's actually a little angry at him.

He watches her pace, almost fascinated by it. He's heard her yell at the others, even heard her given dress-down lectures. He's never really been on the receiving end of one before. It's fascinating. And a little frightening.

Then she asks that question, and he gives her a look. "You're joking, right?"

She stares at him like what? and upon realizing he's not psychic, "No? Why would I joke about that?"

She appears genuinely clueless.

"Now who's brilliant and not really that bright at the same time?" Staring at her. "You really don't get that I've basically had a crush on your since the day we met?"

"I've been busy," she protests, like she's not certain how to deal with this news. "With surgeries. The program." Nevermind that everyone else seems to regard the on call room as the booty call room.

"Does that mean if I asked you to, you'd get tested and actually get neuro on board?" she challenges him.

"Everyone is busy with surgeries and the program."

He stares at her, for a long moment. Would he? For her? For Scott? Either of them, if they asked. Would he? "Yes." It's part of the reason he hasn't even really discussed this with Scott.

[lefthandedgenius]

She purses her lips. Studies him for a long moment.

"Please get tested. If you're positive, please get Scott and the rest of the neuro team on board. Take me out to dinner."

Well, none of that was actually her asking him anything.

So he noticed. And he sort of wonders why. He looks at her, watches her a little warily. "Dinner?"

[lefthandedgenius]

"Dinner. That thing you eat in the evening. Or don't. If you'd rather not. You weren't going to get tested or ask for help, so it makes sense that you weren't going to ask me out, either." She shrugs one shouldered. "Or don't. If you'd rather not."

"That's not why I didn't ask you out. I...of course I'd want to have dinner with you."

[lefthandedgenius]

"That's not the same as saying you will." she points out, possibly a bit ruthlessly. "Are you going to? And why didn't you? Ask me out, I mean. The first question is about dinner, though." Just to clarify.

She has her suspicions. She wants to see if she's right.

"Jackson. Aiden. I'm not exactly your type, Lydia."

[lefthandedgenius]

"Jackson left and Aiden was a distraction." she replies in the same clinical tone. She peers at him. "You don't actually know what my type is. And for someone who was allegedly attracted to me, your inaction is pretty confusing."

She heads for her locker, tugging it open and reaching for her stethescope. "You also didn't answer the question. About dinner. If you're passing, I'd like to know."

He finishes the candy bar, thinking about this. Crumbling the wrapper and tossing it in the trashbin. "I'm not passing."

She makes a hmm sound that might be confirmation, but regardless she suddenly steps up close to him and rubs her thumb along the side of his mouth, wiping a bit of chocolate. "To be clear this is you taking me to dinner. I'm not expecting high class dining, but put some thought into it."

Stepping back she licks her thumb and realizes she'll need to watch her hands again. Oh, well. "I've got a neuro rotation this week. I'll make you an appointment."

Funny how none of these things are questions.

He always puts thought into her, he doesn't say. Because that is creepy, Doctor Stilinski. He just nods, and keeps watching her. Blown away, apparently.

"With the great and powerful neuro-god?" He finally asks.

[lefthandedgenius]

"Of course." she says with a shrug. "But I'm not sure what that has to do with anything other than learning about neuro."

Suddenly she's curious. "What are you planning on specializing in, anyway?"

"Pediatric urgent care." He's good with kids. And he hates to see them bad off.

[lefthandedgenius]

She smiles suddenly, and it lights up her face. "Yeah," she says. "I've seen you with kids who come in sometimes. You're good at keeping them at ease."

"Well. They don't want to be here. Patients or otherwise." He shrugs.

[lefthandedgenius]

There's another tilt of her head. "Not most of the time, no." she agrees. "But you're good at making them feel better about it. You could just be gracious and accept the compliment, Stiles." She sounds mildly chiding.
