Under Da Sea

She remembers the first time she saw him. She'd been a child then, and he was the same age, she had thought. He was pale and skinny, and he'd been wearing floaties. Every year he'd come with his mother and father, and she'd watch from afar.

But then the mother stopped coming, and eventually the boy and his father didn't come anymore either. Every year, right as the land began its warm season, she waited and watched to see if the boy would come.

She decided she would come and wait one last time. To see if the boy and his father would come one last time.

It had gotten to be too much to handle, coming here with his father. Too many good memories that would get tainted by the bad memories of a hospital, a funeral, a grave. And then there were werewolves and darach and god knows what else to deal with, and there didn't ever really seem to be a lot of time to go to the beach. The ocean, or whatever.

But this year, when he was eighteen and he was thinking about whether he should leave to go to school or stay and be here, he had the time. A bit of calm and he could come to the water. Think. Clear his head.

She couldn't believe her luck. It never occurred to her that the boy would come here on his own...and now he was here.

She swam closer. She wanted a better look at him, and momentarily forgot to be cautious about being seen.

He's a little startled, thrown out of his thoughts by someone swimming by. It's the hair, really, that gets her attention. "...hi. I'm sorry, am I in your way?"

It takes her a moment to adjust to using the land tongue, but she learned it a long time ago. She's startled when he addresses her; she hadn't realized she was that close.

Carefully keeping her lower body below the water, she smiles at him. "No, you're not in my way. But I've disturbed you. I'm sorry."

He smiles back, briefly. "You haven't. Really, you haven't."

"Have we met?" she asks, moving to swim around him, but also turning to face him as she does so. She doesn't want him seeing her tail.

He certainly doesn't see it yet. But he thinks she's kind of pretty. Really, really kind of pretty. "I'm not sure. Probably not. I don't come out here much."

"That's a shame. Why not?"

She truly wants to know. She's seen him for years, and then suddenly he was gone.

"You know. Life gets busy. Things get complicated."
